Got a chuckle today when I saw the photo accompanying the ASu Senior Day story in the Republic, with the players carefully decked out, one with a tie.
Some will respond with "what's wrong with that; I think it's great", and yadda-yadda. I just think it's a bit over the top by their p.r. department, along with the portraits in jacket and tie on the football and basketball roster. I'm not trying to demonize their players as anything other than fairly typical college athletes, but I don't care for heavy-handed spin and manipulation by p.r. types who consider themselves geniuses, either.
The message that: "our guys are all wonderful, because you see them in jackets and ties, just like stockbrokers" seems a bit silly. When I see that, I think of a guy appearing in court with his public defender, wearing a borrowed suit and tie, with a fresh shave and haircut so his friends wouldn't recognize him. (Insert Loren Wade jacket and tie roster portrait here.) I also think it sends more of a "we really wish we could be USC when we grow up" message. (USC has kept on doing it since the 1950's, when everybody else did it too, complete with pocket protectors.)
These are college kids who'll wear a jacket and tie only if required to for the team banquet and for the photo shoot (unless somebody gets married or dies.) I doubt that most of the seniors will ever mess around with jackets and ties for job fairs & interviews. To me, that just makes it seem very contrived. Just relax and show 'em in uniform, warm-ups, or polos the way they normally are.
Not trying to start any big deal thread to attack or defend; just my observation.
