Strike one in losing me is the small-time snarkiness and demonizing of anything and everything outside Maricopa County, which of course has been going on for decades at that paper. Everybody who comes to play the local teams is evil. Strike two is in just reprinting ADS or Citizen stories for UofA coverage. Now it's preferable having someone who actually knows something about the team rather than some twerp who blows in about once a month and provides a completely uninformed write-up, including some crucial bit of "color" like how bad their pre-game hot dog was at a Circle K. But, it's pointless when you already read the ADS and Citizen. Strike three is the annoyance of having to clear out cache while they try to strong-arm the ignorant into an on-line subscription. And there's just not much there to justify even that minor level of effort. But, since I'm on holiday break, I gave it about five minutes this morning.
So Dickley is still Dickley. He alternates between "this will be the best thing ever", and "you suck because you're just average and I said you'd be the best thing ever and your failure makes me look stupid(er)." Which brings us to ASu. Good Lord, you look at Navy's schedule and it's barely respectable for a Sun Belt team. You look at ASu's schedule, and the one and only shining light is an unexpected upset of our up-and-down (and beat-up) team after we got killed by UCLA. And notice how much blowing us out helped the Bruins in their 49-26 loss in the Holiday Bowl. Which should be a lesson in not drawing too many conclusions from any one game. I guess we should have run up the score on Savannah State so that would ALSO be "an impressive romp to inspire hope for the future." What a joke.
Meanwhile, I don't know how old the story is, but there was one by Paola (and how about switching out that 'o' for a 'u'?) Boivin about ASu hoops. You know, that's the team that still plays in front of all those empty reddish-brown seats. I swear the caption called them a "Pac-12 contender." Because they've mopped-up on 200 to 300 level RPI teams. But, hey, one or two of them actually have some name recognition from years gone by. Call me when they can consistently beat Arizona, UCLA, Colorado, or Oregon. I wouldn't get too excited about a .500 league record propped-up against the dregs of what looks like another bad year for the bottom two-thirds of the Pac-12. No doubt they'll bitch about winning 20 games against absolutely nobody and still not getting an NCAA bid. I think I've seen this reel before.
The other thing that struck me in the Republic was their "top sports moments of the year." I guess there's a rule that you have to put that in the last Sunday paper before New Year's Day. The Star's was as weak as you'd expect. But the Republic's just showed how small-minded and isolated they are. Fine to put the Steve Nash defection at #1. That's about like when the Suns traded Connie Hawkins. But to put only this state's second national championship in college baseball in 30 years (both by UofA) which was heavily covered for weeks by ESPN way down at #9 behind things like disppointing seasons by Phoenix teams and being played as a bargaining chip by Peyton Manning is laughable. You better believe if it had been ASu winning the CWS, it would have been no worse than #3.
So much for the "Arizona" Republic.
