Bickley is actually one of the more observant reporters/columnists in the Valley and he has been pretty critical of ASu over the years. Some of it is no doubt being caught up in the warmth of the Grice story (who couldn't cheer for him to at least have a good game himself) and Sutton getting the Tillman DPOY award (deserved). But Bickley also gets the dynamics of college sports as well as anyone in this market, and as I read this, based on listening to him and reading his columns for years, I just think "OK...Bickley is throwing down the challenge. No more talk about how things have changed. Here it is. It happens or it doesn't".
And he will kill them if they fail next year, and with Notre Dame and Wisconsin on their schedule? There is likely to be some failure.
I like Bickley for the most part. Yeah...he plays the newspaper columnist games of overhype and attracts attention to minor details to meet copy. That happens. But he also probably follows the college scene without a rooting interest (disqualifying the "big guy" Cesmat) as well and as closely as anyone in the Valley. I say "set up" but I think the better word is challenge. OK...you beat Navy, you won 8, you say you have changed. I'll believe it...if you show me.
And he will spare no words if they fail next year.
One way to make sure the lay up goes....
