I saw something today I thought I'd never see: Northwestern winning a bowl game! Finally, it happened today with the 'Cats beating Mississippi State 34-20 at the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. The feeling of euphoria has not sunk in here yet. NU had been riding a nine-game losing streak in bowl games from the 1996 Rose Bowl up to last year's Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. Congratulations to Pat Fitzgerald and the 'Cats on bringing this win home to Evanston.
Northwestern's only other bowl victory before today came in the 1949 Rose Bowl when NU beat Cal 20-14. In an odd footnote to that game, the 'Cats only got to the Rose Bowl that year because of a now-defunct mandate. 1947 Big Ten champion Michigan had represented the Big Ten in the 1948 Rose Bowl, but the Big Ten had a rule that a team cannot go two years in a row. Michigan finished ahead of second-place Northwestern during the 1948 season, but the rule allowed NU instead of Michigan to go to Pasadena.
Now if we can just get UA to Pasadena on New Year's Day!
