There is a new technology called Bandwidth Efficient Modulation (BEM). It greatly increases the amount of data you can stuff in a given frequency range. It makes a quantum leap in data transmission. Fiber optics is also growing their bandwidth by frequency modulation in the higher wavelengths. essentially using different colors of light to send lots of data down one pipe.
The U of A is in a joint project with several other Universities ( not ASu of course) on a Gigapixel camera. I have been to a couple of lectures, the resolution is incredible. You can take a picture of a large crowd, say the entire Rose Bowl. From that one image you can pull out any face you want in crystal clear resolution. This was never possible previously in spite of what all the movies might lead you to believe. Big brother is indeed watching. The big problem is all the heptatbits of data that needs to be stored and retrieved.
