I can't stand Rick Reilly, so this may become an extra long rant aimed at the master of self-aggrandizing and self-promotional activities, and not directed at any posters here. I think it's hilarious that Lance thought so much of him, he basically used two whole words in his lengthy, heartfelt e-mail.
He acts like he's just reporting the story rather than trying to be part of the story, like he doesn't want any attention. Sort of like wearing a pink t-shirt to your school's home basketball game. And then bristling and becoming a bully when someone calls you out.
The man who beat the drum against Sosa and Bonds (rightly so, obviously) never believed Armstrong was taking drugs? He ambushed Sammy Sosa in the locker room in the name of trying to make himself like a hardened, deep digging journalist. Let's be honest, he wanted to be part of the story. He continued to press Sosa and was surprised when he got mad? He always hated Bonds because Bonds stood him up for an interview. I'm not defending Bonds at all. But I'm pretty sure I'd stand Rick Reilly up knowing the kinds of columns he likes to write. He always defended Lance in spite of the logical conclusions one could make. Why? Because Lance treated him (and turned out used him) like a buddy. He thought he was finally allowed to sit at the cool kid table. And he was surprised when the cool kid used him?
Rick Reilly loves to put up some sort of front about who and what he is. He plays the role of being some morally superior person who likes to remind us how superior he is morally to those he covers and shares a job title with. It's sort of like being the QB that loves to run your mouth when things are going well, but then quiet up when things turn.
Rick Reilly rant over. Carry on.
