being the lack of DL recruits (although less important due to the mission returnees for ’14). However, I would liked to have seen ~3 JC DT/DE’s to help make a difference for the upcoming season. Having said that, I truly believe that this coaching staff knows how to evaluate talent and trusts themselves a lot more than some Scout/Rivals recruiting analyst nerd. The thing so many people don’t realize with regards to football recruiting is how difficult it is to assess kids. It’s very different in basketball where AAU tournaments bring the best players together multiple times per year enabling coaches and recruiting analysts to easily evaluate players going head-to-head against top competition. That just isn’t possible in football and when players are in camps they aren’t going full speed in pads, which makes the evaluation process even more difficult.
It is always good to be highly ranked in recruiting simply from a PR standpoint, but anyone putting a lot of stock in those rankings is fooling themselves. I believe the key to successful recruiting in football is having strong relationships with high school coaches who tip off college coaches they know and like as to who the best players are on their teams (as well as opposing teams) which helps a coaching staff efficiently zeron in on, and recruit high-level players, regardless of how many stars they have.
One of the things that I heard RichRod say was, “We have a bunch of players on our team who like football, but I don’t know how many LOVE football. We will recruit players that love football.” To me, that is everything. IMO, heart and will mean more in football than any other sport, so if you have a bunch of guys on your team (OUR team) that love the game and are football players, the team will have a lot of success, regardless of recruiting rankings.
